It was a privilege to support Tearfund and Christian Aid Northern Ireland at the Big IF event in Belfast. Working alongside David Cavan, our role was to document the event both on stage and behind the scenes. The packed event featured political panel debates and discussions, along with a special gathering held in Botanic Gardens, hosted by Zoe Salmon.
Actors Jim Broadbent and Richard Dormer took to the stage, urging G8 leaders to address global hunger by tackling tax avoidance. Broadbent, known for his role in 'Narnia, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe', also called on the wealthiest nations to reexamine their distribution of aid. He recited Seamus Heaney's poem For the Commander of The Eliza in the Belfast rain.

The Big IF event was organised by over 100 charities and advocacy organisations, including Tearfund, Christian Aid, Save the Children, Oxfam, and UNICEF, all joining forces to draw attention to the issue of food poverty—particularly to the G8 leaders meeting in the UK for their June 2013 summit.
Performing at the event were The Ulster Orchestra, Duke Special, David C Clements, Soak, and General Fiasco. The headline act, Two Door Cinema Club, flew in especially for the event. Frontman Alex Trimble addressed the crowd, acknowledging “The solution is so simple, and the IF campaign communicates it so well. That’s why we were drawn to it.”.
Alex explained that the campaign’s four goals are to increase government aid, prevent corporate tax avoidance, halt land displacement for farmers, and promote government transparency. “These issues can be addressed with proper funding, and that could save millions from starvation,” he said.
Hunger kills more people than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. One in eight people on our planet lives with the pain of hunger, and two million children die each year due to malnutrition. It’s sickening, isn’t it, when it simply doesn’t have to be this way? And it’s not just an issue overseas. Right here in the UK, many hardworking people struggle to put food on the table each day for their families
